PROJECT on the site of the former psychiatric hospital Santa Maria della Piétà in Monte Mario, Rome, Italy

The museum "Laboratorio della Mente" opened in 2000, one year after its closure as a Psychiatric Hospital, founded in 1914. The museum is immersed in a beautiful park, which is now open to the public. The many pavilions of the complex are partly still working as public health hospitals and partly as health care rehabilitation centers. The Pavilion which hosts the Museum was founded to explore the history of the site. Carol Pilars de Pilar was invited by the museum to spent two months onsite and record life there today through her art.

The work was done in a special temporary atelier where Pilars de Pilar painted large dimension portraits of health care workers, patients and other people connected to the place and interviewed them about their perception of the site today. At the end of this project the artist will show her paintings and play excerpts of audio recordings she did during the sessions with her subjects.

The artist was filmed during the painting sessions by Marco Bonfante and Sabrina Sciavone who have created a documentary film of the entire project.
